Padang Padang, Bali – Wednesday, 2 Aug 2017: The 2017 Rip Curl Cup Invitational at Padang Padang could be ON in the next 48 hours. For the second time in the event waiting period, contest directors have switched the official event status from red to yellow, or “High Alert,” in anticipation of a potential Thursday, Aug. 3rd start to competition at 9 AM local Bali time.
A pair of powerful Indian Ocean storms will be sending a plethora of mid to large long-period swell toward the world-class reef at Padang Padang for the second half of this week. The first swell is set to deliver mid to longer period SW to SSW swell from a decent direction for Padang Padang (225-210 degrees) and is scheduled to make landfall on Thursday (Aug 3rd) and peak in the late afternoon.
At this stage, wave heights from this swell at Padang Padang are predicted to be borderline size required to run the Rip Curl Cup, but the 16 invited surfers and event crew will be ready at Padang Padang Thursday morning at 8 AM to make an official call for a potential 9 AM start to Round 1.
If the Aug. 3rd swell fails to deliver the world-class spitting tubes that have become the calling card of the Rip Curl Cup, there is still hope to run over the weekend. A larger and even more promising swell is expected for Sunday, Aug. 6th. At this point, official event forecaster Surfline has identified the Aug. 6th swell, predicted to arrive from an ideal westerly direction of 220-230 degrees, as “the best swell in the remaining waiting period.”
According to Surfline, “At this point it appears that the (Aug. 6th) swell will peak overnight, with holding swell Sunday morning and very gradually easing over the afternoon (but really should be strong surf through the day given the behavior of the storm). During the best tides we expect to see 8-12’ faces at Padang Padang, with potential for a few larger sets. Wind looks favorable at this point with normal trades.”
Contest directors are monitoring the latest ocean and weather data closely and the 16 invited surfers to the 2017 Rip Curl Cup will be ready to go for the first pulse on Thursday morning (Aug 3rd) at 8 AM should they be given the green light for the most anticipated tube riding shootout of the year.
Following are the opening Round 1 & 2 heat draw for the 2017 Rip Curl Cup (Note: The opening round of competition is non-elimination. The eight surfers with the highest combined heat scores from Rounds 1 & 2 will advance to the semifinals):
