REnextop Asian Surfing Tour (RAST) Stop #2 in Shizuoka Gets Underway at Makinohara with Great Longboard Action on Day 1

7 September 2017:  Makinohara, Shizuoka – Japan:  The 2nd stop of the RAST Tour got underway today at Makinohara Beach with excellent 2-3 foot surf on offer, allowing the Men’s and Women’s Longboard Divisions to run through and decide the semifinalists by the end of the day.

Posting the day’s highest single wave and total heat score of the day in the Men’s Longboard division was Dean Permana from Indonesia.  His highest single wave score was a 7.83 (out of a possible 10 points) and his total heat score was 14.16 points out of a possible 20, which he earned by combinations of stylish maneuvers well honed at his home break of Batu Karas in West Java.

“I’m so happy to be here in Japan, and to be able to join this REnextop contest,” said Permana with a big smile.  “It’s my first time in Japan and it’s so great to be here and experience everything.  The waves were really fun today and I’m glad to make it into the semifinals…hopefully I’ll do well tomorrow and get into the final!” he explained.

In the Women’s Longboard Division it was the Philippine’s Daisy Valdez who posted the top scores for the women, equaling Permana’s high score with her own 7.83 score and besting his total heat score with a 14.75.  Valdez was the runner up at the RAST #2 event in Bali and is looking to finish in the top stop of the podium here in Japan.

“The waves are not that big today but they are great for longboarding, so it was good to be out there and win both of my heats and get into the semifinals,” said Valdez.  “I’m looking forward to tomorrow’s semifinals and hope to make another final, but I want win this time!  It’s my first time to Japan and I’m happy to see surfers that I’ve met before in Bali and in the Philippines and also to meet surfers from Japan here in their own country.  I’m having a great time and I really want to thank the people that sponsored and supported me so I could make it here” she added.

It is Head Judge Keenan Roxburgh from Australia’s first time to Japan as well, and was nothing but pleased with how the day ended up, saying, “When I arrived last yesterday afternoon the waves were quite small, so it was really refreshing to wake up this morning and see such good surf.  We had a clearly defined sand bank that was perfect for longboarding, and the display of surfing we got to see was such a great mix of Asian countries putting on their surfing.”

When asked what impressed him the most from the day’s action he replied, The highlight for me was Daisy from the Philippines putting together two great scores to win her first heat of the day.  I’ve seen her surf before but not at her best apparently, as today she really stepped it up.  Great to see her into the semifinals, which we’ll run tomorrow along with the finals in both the men’s and women’s longboard divisions.”

A total of 32 competitors from Japan, China, Indonesia, Korea, and the Philippines competed today, and on Saturday we’ll see the 27 Men’s and Women’s Shortboard competitors (with surfers from Taiwan as well) take to the water.

Tomorrow will see the finals of the Men’s and Women’s Longboard divisions, and on Saturday afternoon the completion of the Men’s and Women’s Shortboard division along with a big beach party with DJ’s from Tokyo bringing it all to a great finale.

The REnextop Asian Surfing Tour (RAST) was officially opened this morning by Mayor Nishihara of Makinohara, complete with a tea toasting and banging of the big drum.  In his speech he welcomed all the international competitors and wished them all good luck in the competition
